What is a rite of passage?
A rite of passage is a ceremony or ritual which occurs when an individual abandons one stage of their life to enter another. When a participant goes through the passage they will experience a change in their social status and overall social perception. Partaking in initiation rites is seen as fundamental to human growth and development. Lastly, rites of passage are known to link individuals to their community and the community to the individual.

Separation
The first stage in a rite of passage is loss of identity. Usually abrupt or violent in nature or in a community. Lastly, separation often involves alienation or movement across deserted boundaries

Transition
The second stage in a rite of passage is known as "in-between." This is when the participant has lost his old identity, but has not yet been fully re-incorporated into the community.

Incorporation
The final stage of the process usually consists of moving the participants out of isolation and back into the community with a new identity.
